The Two Extremes of Rabbit Age
The Oldest Rabbit on Record
I have read many reports about rabbits living up to 18 and even past 19 years.
rabbit in the Guiness Book of World Records died at the age of 18, but I'll go with the most recent record that has been officially recognised.
To date, the oldest rabbit was a Jersey Wooly rabbit called 'Do', (on account of his crazy hair), who lived 2 weeks past his 17th year!
typically live from about 5 to 10 years.
Jenna, Do's owner, put his long life down to his diet, along with good genetics and a large helping
of regular love!
"I never gave him a carrot, or any other vegetables, fruits, or
treats", she explains. "Only timothy hay and some pellets - I kept it simple and
'Do', a pet-shop-bought Jersey Wooly who lived for 17 years and 2 weeks.
Sadly, Do passed away in January 2013.
He was 17 years and 2 weeks old and awarded a Guinness Book of records certificate.
Jenna Antol has written a children's book inspired by his adventures.
If you think your rabbit can beat this old timer and you have documented proof, such as a record of birth -
then get on to the Guiness Book of Records now! And don't forget to let
us know about the results!
The Wild and Young
Sadly, we can estimate that most wild rabbits don't even make it to their first Birthday. And they certainly don't live as long as our domesticated pet rabbits for several reasons.
Wild rabbit suffering with the fatal disease, Myxomatosis.
Of course there are other reasons why wild rabbits don't live very long in the wild, but crikey, the poor little things have no chance really.
Genetically, if all these scary killing factors were taken away, we might have a different answer as to how long do rabbits live in the wild. They could live up to 10 years, but sadly it just never happens.
That's nature for you!
They are caught by predators such as foxes, birds of prey and dogs etc.
Wild rabbits have a poorer diet, especially in the winter when food is scarce.
They are more likely to get serious and fatal diseases such as Myxomatosis.
They are run over by road traffic or farm machinery.
Whole communities of wild rabbits can be killed by countryside or forest fires.
They are shot, hunted or killed for sport.
They are targeted for culling when an area is over-run and crops are getting eaten and damaged.
They are more likely to have genetic mutations at birth.
The mother abandons or leaves the babies for any of the above reasons.

Rabbit Age Poll
This is a very quick poll for you to record how old your rabbit is.
Many books out there at the moment are saying rabbits only live until
the ages of 5 or 6 and very few of them are recording the true average
I'd love to get a more up to date record, wouldn't you?
Many readers have reported their bunnies living way into their teenage years.
